It is always recommend that you buy both a new base and mattress together. This is because the two are designed and manufactured to complement each other in terms of support. Your base will have had equal pressure and strain to your mattress even if not visible, as your mattress will show more visible signs of wear and tear. You also have to bare in mind that if you use a base and mattress from two different manufacturers the warranty will be compromised, as the two are designed for use together. Another point to watch is making sure the dimensions of any base and mattress separately sourced are compatible - two Kings might not be quite the same size!
Which size mattress?
3'0 Single mattress Single mattresses are ideal for those who don't require much space to sleep on, or do not have much space in which to accommodate a larger bed for a larger mattress and therefore a single mattress is an ideal solution. 4'6 Double Mattress Double beds are the ideal choice for those who wish to sleep together on the same mattress but don't quite have enough space for a 5'0 king size mattress or a 6'0 super king size mattress. For many a 4'6 double mattress is an ideal size, but for more space and freedom to move without disturbing your partner, a 5'0" king size mattress or a 6'0" super king size mattress would be better. 5'0 King size Mattress For those who require more space in bed, a 5'0 knig size mattress is ideal. It is always important to make sure that you have the space to accommodate a 5'0 kingsize mattress, as the extra 6" can make a difference.

What are the standard bed sizes? (Source: http://www.sleepcouncil.com ) There are no uniform or universal standards of sizes or names for bed sizes that have to be used in law: the terms that are used are descriptive and there is no guarantee that the term King, for example, will be applied to exactly the same size product by different manufacturers. Metric sizes are not exactly the same as imperial sizes, either.

Back Pain Sufferers Back pain is one of the most common reasons for buying a new bed. Whilst it is true that changing your mattress will help relieve discomfort its essential that you choose the right springing unit. Orthopaedic mattresses are the firmest mattresses in that manufacturer's range and means that the mattress is recommended by back specialists. However if you do suffer from back pain an ultra firm mattress may not be advisable, you should get a normal firm mattress. Different springing units work in unique ways to help relieve pressure and tension in the body.
Terminology Springs The springs provide the main support in the mattress. The firmness of the mattress is determined by changing the thickness of the wire and the number of coils and the density of the springs. Some modern mattresses are 'zoned' to allow for the spread of body weight, giving most support where the majority of the weight is at the hips and shoulders. It also provides different degrees of firmness on each side of the mattress.
Pocket Springs If you are looking for a high degree of body support and a more flexible response to compression from your mattress, then you require a pocket-sprung mattress. The individually wrapped springs allow the mattress to adapt along the length of the body providing support where it is most needed. There are varying support options depending on the type of spring and the range of upholstery materials used. Pocket sprung mattresses are generally to be found in the mid to upper price bands. With the most expensive of this often being hand made using first class materials. Tufting Tufting is often associated with pocket spring beds. Tufting puts the mattress under tension but prevents the loose fillings usually used in the pocked spring mattresses from being dislodged. A tufted mattress has a dimpled effect surface Visco Elastic This is a relatively new material appearing in beds. It is premium quality, high-density foam which is energy absorbing and temperature sensitive, with pressure relieving features. The Visco Elastic foam moulds itself to the shape of the body and recovers to its natural state when the pressure is removed, as shown in the picture to the right.

Platform Top Divans / Firm Top Divans These are wooden sided frames with a rigid unsprung panel. Often teamed with firm mattresses and called 'Orthopedic Beds'. This option often works out cheaper as fewer materials and therefore less labour is required to make them.
Platform Top Divan This means that the divan is on CASTORS, with no drawer storage options. This option is available in all sizes.
End Drawer Divan The divan comes with one drawer only, situated at the end of the bed. Only available in 4'6 and 5'0 sizes.
Two Drawer Base This Divan comes with two large drawers on either side of the bed. It is up to you whether you have these draws at the top or the bottom of the bed, as the divan comes as two half bases and then joins together. The draws open out away from the bed. Available as a 3'0, 4'0, 4'6 and 5'0, however if brought as a 3'0 both drawers are positioned on the same side of the base.
Jumbo End Drawer Base/ Three Drawer Divan Base The bed comes with two large drawers that open out at the top of the bed, as well as a large drawer at the foot of the bed. Available as a 4'0, 4'6 and 5'0.
Slide Store Base This divan base comes with under bed storage for rooms with little space. Little space is needed at the sides of the bed, as the drawers slide open, rather than opening out away from the bed. If brought as a 4'0, 4'6 or 5'0 then the slide store drawer will be situated at the foot end of the base. However, if brought as a 3'0 then the slide store drawer will be found along the side of the base.
Continental Drawer Divan Ideal for people requiring bedside tables. There are two drawers on each side of the bed. One large, one small, allowing room for bedside tables to fit in next to the bed. Available as a 4'0, 4'6 and 5'0.
Jumbo Drawer Base/ Four drawer Divan Base This drawer option is for maximum storage capacity as there are four large drawers, two on either side of the base. This option is available in a 4'0, 4'6, 5'0 and 6'0.
Continental End Drawer Divan Small storage drawers on both sides of the base, allowing space for a bedside table. Large storage drawer at the foot end of the bed. Only available as a 4'6 and 5'0.
